Want to be the best dressed in the newsroom? Sophie Laughton looks back at nine notable fashion moments from broadcast journalists this last year.

We’re used to seeing broadcasters trotting out the same old uniform of navy blue suits and bodycon midi dresses, so it’s always a treat when they spice it up a little.

But sometimes their sartorial choices can lead to raised eyebrows – even when it’s entirely unwarranted.

From floral fantasies to shaggy 70s ‘dos, here are the most noteworthy fashion moments we’ve spotted on the news this year.

Dan Walker – BBC Breakfast

We’re all for Walker’s wardrobe brightening up people’s mornings, but this particular shirt choice was so loud even Specsavers had something to say.

Cathy Newman – Channel 4 News

Cathy Newman is a big fan of quirky designer Paul Smith for her on-air workwear, but this Antiques Roadshow-inspired sweater is particularly attention grabbing.

Tomasz Schafernaker – BBC Weather

Pre-pandemic, Schafernaker was one of the most clean-cut men on daytime TV.

Now he’s giving a masterclass in lockdown hair, and his luscious locks have earned him comparisons to Samwise Gamgee from The Lord of the Rings, Jon Bon Jovi, and a “70s porn star”.

Charlotte Hawkins – Good Morning Britain

Piers Morgan storming off the set of GMB on March 9 overshadowed his other misdemeanour that day – mocking Charlotte Hawkins for her “mini skirt”.

She was forced to stand up and display the length of her Karen Millen colour block dress, and Morgan was blasted online for his “unacceptable misogyny”.

Sophie Raworth – BBC News

The City alumna is known for her impeccable wardrobe of gorgeous frocks, so it seems only fair that London womenswear brand Wyse named this ditsy floral number after her (seen on the News at Ten in August 2020).

Charlene White

The ITV anchor and presenter Charlene White wore this vibrant Boden co-ord to host both Loose Women and ITV News in September 2020. With an outfit this good, who can blame her?

Laura Tobin – ITV Weather

GMB’s meteorologist Laura Tobin was left embarrassed in January after Ben Shephard described her green pleather dress as a “bin bag”.

Far from being trash, her environmentally friendly outfit was actually from high street brand Monsoon’s sustainable collection. Tobin thanked GMB’s stylist, Debbie Harper, for her eco-conscious choice.

Owain Wyn Evans – BBC Weather

The effervescent weather presenter is always impressing with his immaculate dress sense (and drumming skills), but this blush pink three-piece suit is an absolute stand out.
